Back to unbelievable back champs

The spring of 2006 was an unforgettable one for Conval High, with the baseball team winning the state championship for the first time since 1975, and an even more remarkable accomplishment—back to back state championships for the girls’ lacrosse team. But it sure didn’t look that way at the beginning of the season.

After going undefeated in 2005, the Cougars opened the 2006 season with three consecutive losses. But the seasoned group rallied with nine wins in a row, and earned another berth in the Class I (D2) tournament. It was hardly smooth sailing, though. In the semi-finals, Conval trailed by three goals before pulling out a victory. And in the finals against Portsmouth, the Cougars trailed by five (!) at halftime, rallied to force overtime, and won the championship in extra time, 16-14. Wow!

Members of the 2006 state champs were (pictured above, front row, from left): Jordan Cuddemi, Kristin Lederman, Mira Kohl, Hannah Wilder, Emily Fecowicz. Back row: Jenny Welch, Maggie Murphy, Averill Nelson, Meredith Bolton, Chelsea Herman, Lauren Lastrina, Samantha Bond, Carly Goolbis, Lindsey Eneguess, Brenna Langille, Lauren Houlihan.
